Marines Implement New Alcohol Abuse Program

A new report in the Marine Corps Times states that Marines caught drunk driving or involved in any other alcohol related incidents will be required to participate in a new program focusing on intervention.
The new program is called “Prime for Life.” It incorporates evidence-based intervention and interactive programs that help marines to understand the facts about risky drinking behaviors.
The goal of the program is to assess and influence Marines’ attitudes and beliefs, according to “A Message to Marines,” which was signed by Brigadier General Robert Hedelund, Director of the Marine and Family Programs Division in Quantico, Virginia.
A portion of the message states, “We will equip our Marines with effective tools to promote readiness within our ranks. Alcohol education affords Marines involved in alcohol-related incidents an opportunity to effectively recognize and mitigate high-risk actions.”
Prime for Life program is just one of many alcohol prevention initiatives that will be implemented by the Marine Corps this year. The Marines and Navy will also begin conducting random alcohol breath tests, beginning in 2013.
